I'm hella tired.

A few years ago, I went to one of those Christian motivational talks/conferences or something.  The theme was staying strong and sticking to your convictions, or something like that, and the mascot/ merchandise which was sold outside the conference hall was a little match man (matchstick man).  The speaker made constant references to this "little match man" in his talk, but I've completely forgotten the story.

All I know, is I got sucked into buying it.

He's wearing a little t-shirt which says be strong (sorta links in with sticking with your convictions etc).  This toy no longer has any religious meaning to me. But it reminds me that I want myself to stay strong and carry out my plans (not quit whenever things get tough, etc).  And it works. I'm not quitter.

I like his outfit.  But he reminds me of Gollywogs and the Othello Tophus used to draw D:

Anyway, after listening to my friend complain about her crappy job, I feel a bit better about mine because I get to work with cool people, foreign people and lots and lots of friendly folk.

I'm going to Tetsuya's on Wednesday night!  Eating fusion Jap/French with my favourite French person.  It's gonna be schweet!  But I'll be freaking poor during the weeks after. =_=;  If it's not what it's hyped up to be, I will be disappointed.  And I feel so under prepared!  A few months back, I was starting to have a bit of red with my dinner, but until now, I still haven't been able to enjoy it. D: Does it really take that long to acquire an acquired taste for red wine?  I just detest it.  :( But apparently it goes well with red meat.

Hmm. NEXT POST will be about another dessert place I visited on Australia Day evening.  It's called iSweety House and is near the Mandarin Club on Dixon Street.  Just gotta put it here to remind myself ;D

D's new glasses are RED - ahaha. He's so trendy. Plastic glasses are so light :| This pair must be 2-3 times lighter than mine. Feels so strange.  My own plastic (I don't think Lacoste calls it plastic, but it sure feels like it) glasses are heavier, but are too trendy for work and too fobby to wear out when I'm with friends. Hoho. So I wear them at home when I'm reading books with fine print.

That was a bit of trivia you didn't need to know at all.

I am a winner foshobro, I mean, girlfriend!

When I came home today (after a loooong and tiring day at Woolloomooloo), I was greeted with a parcel.

At first I thought it was from Book Depository, then I remembered I haven't impulse bought anything from there recently.

Then I thought it was an Ebay thing.. but I only buy tiny parcels worth of goods on ebay.

Then I just decided to stop guessing and opened the package.

WOOHOO

And for those who are wondering, no I didn't buy the magazine, but YES, I CONFESS, I READ IT. I read it whenever my sister buys it and leaves it in the living room table.  It keeps me amused for ages and is actually very, very full of factual information.

Anyway, I have been swamped with work again.  On the train ride home, I heard some kids talk about maths on the train.

I thought hmm reminds me of junior years, then the math talk was getting louder and louder, and I thought wow, this really reminds me of school, then they started talking about ag.

Haaa.  Then we got off at the same stop and I saw their faces and THEY RECOGNISED ME!  "Isn't that the senior from ages ago". FYI kids, it wasn't ages ago. >: (  I've only been away from school for ONE YEAR.

School kids have really gotta pipe down on the train.  Esp during peak hour when its normally full of quiet work people.  And stop talking about maths & ag during your holidays !!!

But yes, ceebz ranting about work because there's too much confidential stuff. lol

Shi Lin Food- Taiwanese snack bar

A lot of people don't know this, but there is a small centre of fobby boutiques on Dixon Street nr Chinatown.  Meelo and I found it a few months ago when we went exploring (I think we were in search of a WC).  Last time, everything was brand spanking new and there weren't too many stores open.  Yesterday, I revisited this place and found out that the little Taiwanese snackfoods store was open at last. HURRAH!

The store itself caught my eye. It's divided into two parts; savoury snacks and desserts.  I forgot to take photos of the dessert bar- it just looked like a watermelon :D

Honestly, I was really, really full from that burger in a bowl I had at The Counter, but I couldn't help but feel super curious about these Taiwanese snacks. Mmm. Ended up trying some.

 Menu..

Freaking yom.  I really recommend the "sausage wrapped in a rice sausage".  Basically it's a sausage of glutinous rice with another meat sausage sandwiched in it.  Doesn't sound so appealing, but when you watch it turning on the rack and smell of cooking sausages wafting into your face it just gets overwhelming. Smelled so good...

After Meidi's, I've discovered that I really like watching my food turn/spin. Hehe. It smelled so goooood.  As you can see ^ up there, there is a white sausage, and pink one.  The dude sliced open one of the white ones (rice) and put in half a pink one.  Something so simple can taste so good.

Then there was Pigs blood & glutinous rice on a stick coated in peanut.

I've never had anything like this before. So weird, don't think it's something I will eat again.  I prefer the sausages.

Tea boiled eggs weren't so great.  He should have soaked them for longer.

This dessert was good!  SAY GOODBYE TO MEET FRESH, and HELLO TO THIS LITTLE BOWL OF GOODNESS!  Meet Fresh is overpriced, so incredibly stingy, slow, their ingredients are heavily processed and you can spend ages lining up!  This place had grass jelly which tasted like grass jelly and not just brown sugar!  We got a large clump of taro, brown sugar jelly (amazing texture), grass jelly on a bed of sweetened tofu.

Didn't like the tofu. It was a bit too curdled. But it's hard to make tofu which is nice and smooth.  We've tried to make it on numerous occassions and it only ever succeeded twice.  CURDLES TOO EASILY!

The Counter- Custom Built Burgers

Photo post!  Only happens once in a blue moon (or when I have recovered my camera from the rubble & debris that is my room.

Ok. So this morning afternoon, I met up with the girlies to have lunch.  Originally, we were supposed to eat ramen at the best ramen place in Sydney, Ryo (Crow's Nest), however, unfortunately because I was > 1.5 hrs late, the line was already too long.  So we headed back and passed...

INDIANEST!

After a 15min (or so) walk, we arrived at The Counter, Custom Built Burgers.

The place looked sturdy... all the chairs were made out of really clangy, light metal.  When I walked in, I felt like I was walking into Charlie & Co's burger joint. It has a similar air to it.  (But honestly, I prefer this place, the restaurant is larger, you have more choice, it's in Crow's Nest... my new favourite suburb)

Then we got our forms!  Later I changed my meat from beef to turkey (by the way, I have a question... if you have issues with someone, do you "have beef" with them, or do you "have a beef" with them?  We got into quite a debate re this, and I just want to find a way to settle it once and for all. Apparently Eminem says "have a beef"...)

There are two main types of burgers- bread and no bread.  The burgers which have no bread come in a large bowl of leafy lettuce/baby greens.  Then you have your choice of meat: Chicken, Beef, Turkey, Vegetarian.  You choose your cheese, what topping you want, what type of salad and sauce (dijion balsamic!).

We ordered a side dish of sweet potato fries. Omnomnom.

Took one bite/slice and thought, geez man, best combo of flavours & juices ever. Mmm...

All gone. Perfect meal for a perfect day with my awesome friends. A nice refreshing day breathing in clean air, being outdoors... getting away from the office scene...

The only good thing about working late is the fact that I can take photos of my client's meeting room without A) getting busted, B) feeling embarassed and C) being asked why I am doing what I am doing. 


Completely digressed from food. But oh well.  Fell asleep in the park for a good 2-3 hours today.  Woke up and took a photo.

It's so nice to be outdoors!  Have a lovely weekend guys!

PPS. What the hell?! I saw so many of you guys today!  First the girls, then the boys outside French Riviera, then the other girls at Ichiban Boshi, then my beloved mentoreeeee!! EXCELLENT DAY!

Hello all,

As you can probably tell, I'm not a very thrifty spender.  I usually buy what I like, when I feel like it. Consequently, I am not a very good saver.

I know I spend the majority of money on food.  The past two weeks, I've had the following:

1. Meals at the cafe opposite my current building, averaging around $12 each. I had all 5 lunches there last week, and this week on Monday and Tuesday.  Total $84.
2. Because I've been working late, I've been getting the munchies more often, and that vending machine downstairs isn't doing me any favours.  Pretzels = $1.80, Burger Rings = $1.80, Crunch chocolate bar = $2.40.  I've had Pretzels 4 times + Burger rings once + Crunch 4 times. Total $18.60. (WTFFFFFFFFFF)
3. Dinner on Saturday night at Hogsbreath. Total: $30
4. Baskin + Robins on after Hogsbreath. Total: $7.something.
5. Dinner on Sunday night at Viva Goa (should probably blog about that). Total: Just under $20.
6. Lunch for Wednesday + Thursday: Chunky. Total = $6.
7. Munchies Wednesday + Thursday: $5
8. Cans of coke- 3. Total: $4.50

GRAND TOTAL = $175.10something

Wow. My heart just broke.

Or rather, my stomach.

As of yesterday, I am on my "I'm-going-to-save-money-for-Tetsuya's" plan. I have not visited the vending machine (went to Woolies on Monday night) or the cafe.

Status: Still feeling very motivated to save. Except I have run out of cans and don't know what to have for lunch tomorrow !!!

Quandary

I finally met someone who is desperate to dine at Tetsuyas.  We called Tets at lunch yesterday and there isn't really a waiting list for anyone who wants to go Mon-Weds.

I think once you work full time you start appreciating all the spare time you had at uni.

Despite being uber busy in busy season, I have been indulging my tastebuds to the max :) well as much as I can with cafeteria food anyway.

Hi Everyone.

Thought I'd say hi and check in before work starts. I am not exactly looking forward to it because we're diving straight into busy season. Enough work talk. I'm sure you all hate reading about it.

Have had lots on my mind lately, I don't know why everything seems to come all at once sometimes.  To cope with stress from home/work/everywhere else, I have resorted to learning Spanish. Why Spanish? Because it's free to learn online (and pretty easy).

Anyway, I have nothing positive/inspirational to say right now (or ever), so I will just disappear and do some prep for tomorrow.

Stay cool and don't take drugs kiddos.

Broken English

If you actually click on the video box and watch this on youtube, you can see shetloads of annecdotes added by the re-uploader. OMG hilarious. This girl is such a hypocrite.

For those who don't understand her broken english, she's trying to point out that HK teachers speak really bad english and in some cases it sounds like they're swearing. Not really. My mum speaks broken English, but I find that most people are quite accomodating here unlike Ruby in the video.



So yeah. I just woke up from  a nightmare (went to bed early- yay!) and logged into fb to do a bit of video surfing.  She's #37 most subscribed in HK, and when you actually think about it, it is something you should be proud of.  I know HK is small, but there are HEAPS of people stacked ontop of each other in their skyscraper apartments.  A few weeks ago, I was flipping through a HK magazine and I happened to see an article about Ruby (above) and Mingjai14 (another HK youtube personality who lives in Canada) and their rise to fame via Youtube.  At this point in time, Mingjai14 only had 5 videos up (but it's understandable because some of his earliest videos were very amusing). Can't say the same for Ruby, but I mean, seriously, she got her 15 minutes of fame (in the Chinese-Australian community; even M & D know who she is!) and it just goes to show how EASY it is to be famous in HK.

That was a bit of an over-generalisation. What I mean to say is, if you have an opinion, and you voice it to the youtube community, in CANTONESE, you will get lots and lots of views, esp if you speak in broken english and bitch about your examiners for part of your video.

Why do I place heavy emphasis on Cantonese? A few reasons actually. People who understand Cantonese are generally quite nosy.  If you skim through magazines which are highly popular in HK, you'll find that there are alot of articles about female celebrities forgetting to shave their pits, or journalists who sneak into the changing rooms of stars when they're performing a concert. The photographer takes these photos because he/she knows it will generate public interest. ARGH. It's so twisted and absolutely disrespectful.

Another reason to speak in Cantonese in videos, is to attract the attention of BBCs & ABCs, or CBC's who are looking for a way to get closer to their roots. I know I've typed in "Canto vlog" a couple of times into youtube (getting videos of some sort of recorded gameplay...) or "cantonese vlog".

I don't know why I have so much to say about this topic. It's not like I'd even consider vlogging on youtube.  I wouldn't know what I'd talk about. And I'm too afraid of offending people.  The youtube audience sure is wider and meaner than my blog audience (I love you guys :D) but I am curious to see what kind of feedback I'd get from everyone if I made a vlog in Canto (and whether I'd rise to asian stardom *-* ). But yes, emphasising again, that this will probably not happen because I am too afraid of ruining my image by saying something stupid (remember J01@nd@? geez, even saying her name makes me paranoid) will make me unemployable in the future. [A perfect example is Jay Park aka Jabeom from 2pm. He apparently got kicked out of the band because he once said something bad about South Korea on his myspace...] 

But digressing slightly, yes, if you haven't noticed already, I am kind of obsessed with M's motherland. Can't help it though. I watch their tv, my parents read the paper, talk about celebrity gossip over there, we speak in that language at home and geez, there's such a large community of us in Sydney- most of my friends are Asian if not Chinese.  My bogan cousin pokes fun at me- but I'd rather be a fob than a bogan.


Damn. Ruby triggered all these thoughts. They just all came pouring out of my mouth through my fingers.  I guess chatting to M since she got back from HK also contributed to this sudden outbreak.  One of her HS friends is nicknamed "sing ma", no, not Danny's dad, but it means "Star mum". Reason being she's always bragging about her son being a cameo dancer for events and whatnots that go on around the city.. not that anyone really cares about the bg dancers, when someone like Raymond Lam is singing on a burning stage with his freaking shiny costume on.

And yes, someone in our household actually obtained a copy of his concert on DVD and we watched (as a family) one rainy weekend and we just "ooh"ed and "ahh"ed the whole way through because it was just so FULL OF FIRE! *release the inner pyromanic*.  This is another reason why HK rocks.  Because their concerts are SO MUCH CHEAPER and the singers actually put on a good show (FIRE!) without lip syncing- coughbritneycough.


BUT DIGRESSING COMPLETELY.

I watched a video shot in Taipei. And I've decided that I really, really, really want to go.  Last year after HSC, I was planning to make a short stop at TW. I would have progressed with the planning if it weren't for D. For future note, I should stop taking D's advice if I want to have a good time.  TP looks like a really fun place to go to with friends, but I guess all places are good with friends.  I miss my friends.  Good thing I'm able to see some tomorrow today.

Mmm. I feel like tipsy with lethargy. Like I no longer know what I'm saying and how offended some may get if they read it, and I don't know if this makes grammatical sense. But I'll post it up anyway and hope for the best. I'll read again in the morning, and if it's that bad I'll deleteeeeeeeeeee.

Oh, and just before I go, I went to see HP7 today. I thought it was smad. Esp all the awkward scenes- ie Hermione and Harry dancing?  Hilarious. sim and I were exchanging looks and little snorts of amusement during the film (much to the annoyance of the woman sitting on my right. Who was quite annoying herself, might I add. She had her hand resting on MY SLUSHIE and when my hand accidentally, (and awkwardly grazed hers) when I was trying to get my slushie, she gave me the foulest glare in the dark.  She was also hogging all the of the arm rest.

I shall end my rant here.  Man, this has been one long blog about nothing at all. =_=;

On a brighter note, before I woke up, I'm sure I was dreaming about Jake Gyllenhaal as HP in Hogwarts. Can't remember anything else, but hey, it's Jake!  (and Harry Potter is pronounced "hairy pahdur" in Americanised English. Hehe)

Searching for good coffee

So much stuff I want right now:

•  a new place to go for coffee during uni. Charlie Lovetts is argh, overrated.
• a netbook that can vanish and reappear upon command
• my camera back (or a better one)
• wifi everywhere
• gumboots. i wish they would come into fashion...
• my phone plan to expire
• P-plates
• to be able to fall asleep

My plan to eat in moderation is failing badly. It is hard work preventing myself from flinging open the fridge door and consuming everything that is inside. Esp since I know there are 2 ramekins of my t-a-s-t-e-y jiggly dessert + my awesome drunk chicken hiding behind the door.

The deal with finding a new coffee place:
Since starting work, I find that most of my week is hustle bustle. On my uni day however, when I'm fully chillax, I usually head to Charlie Lovetts because it's the only non weird, non starbucks and non gloria jeans cafe near Central/Uts/Usyd.  This sem, I'm hoping I can find a quiet tea house/coffee shop to do some reading or mind-resting between classes. 

Any ideas?

P.S. I'm at uni on Fridays + Thursday nights this sem!  Free from 4pm! yaaay come find meeee for early dindins (esp @ usyd-ers)

Healthy Dessert- a first!

I pretty much never make healthy desserts, but I made one today after spending a bit of time watching youtube.

Instead of making panna cotta with vanilla and cream, I opted for yoghurt and skim milk and made a mango & peach panna cotta :D  Super easy

Ingredients:

• 2 cups of vanilla yoghurt (full cream/lite either, honestly I can't tell the difference between the two, lite can be really creamy :/ )
• 1 cup of skim milk
• 1.5 tablespoon of gelatine
• 1/4 cup of boiling water
• Half a mango (just a cheek)
• 1 peach

Method:

1. Halve your mango cheek, puree half and dice the other half. Do the same thing with the peach.
2. Combine the yoghurt, fruit puree and milk (with a whisk, or a spoon)
3. Gently stir in the diced fruit.
4. In a separate bowl, dissolve the gelatine powder in the boiling water. Mix, mix, mix until well combined, then pour evenly into your yoghurt mix.
5. STIR
6. Using a ladle, divide your mixture between a few ramekins (should fill 5 normal sized ramekins) and cover with aluminium foil.
7. Leave to chill in the fridge for about 6 hours.

When it's done, quickly run a hot knife around the edges, and plonk your jiggly dessert on a plate.  Last night, I ate my passionfruit, so I didn't have enough to drizzle on my panna cotta.  But I know it would look absolutely beautiful.

And there you have it- a completely guilt-free dessert.  I felt that after my carnivorous adventure last night, I needed to layoff foods which are labelled as a heart risk.  And what better way than to use up the yoghurt which is going to waste in the fridge. D accidently bought it just before he left- apparently it looks like the tropical tub, and he picked up the wrong one.  I guess everything works out in the end!

Meidi BBQ House

Hi Everyone,

This has got to be the most exciting post I've done all year (hehe and it's just the beginning, 2011 is going to be so good!).

On Tuesday night, S, A, L, J, M, R, M & I visited Meidi BBQ House for their all-you-can-eat meat skewers.  Freaking awesome. Milo is also freaking awesome. Thanks for the photos!!! (they look yummy!)

Uber glad I finally found time to try this place. I've been excited about it since Chocolatesuze's post after her visit, and when I discovered a few fellow meat enthusiasts were available on Tuesday night, I hurriedly created a fb event, and before I knew it, we were standing outside Meidi's.


Meidi BBQ is actually located next to the former Tingha Palace in Parramatta.  I think that place is renamed Prince's Seafood Restaurant now. i.e. The Asian side of Parra. :)

When I got there, everyone was waiting outside, with very impatient faces. Haha! I don't blame them!

We walked straight in, dropped off our bags, and attacked the open meat fridges.  There were strange contraptions on every table. Burning charcoal is put into the middle and you stick your skewer into the slot and VOILA watch your skewer turn. Imo, the best part was watching the chicken wings turn and turn and turn and turn, and eventually turn a beautiful golden colour... dripping with chicken fat. Mmmm.

Wide array of meats- lamb, mongolian lamb, spicy rice cake, fish balls, sausages, vege (mushroom + capsicum), wagyu beef, terriyaki marinade, sardine...

The list continues... satay chicken, chicken gizzard, intestine, terriyaki chicken, chicken heart...

They spin!

Another option is to place a rack over the heat to cook non-skewered items.  We started cooking these mini-steaks, but chatted for way too long and forgot about them. Haha.

Spin, spin, SPIN!  Such a genius idea. Serious props to anyone who invented the spinning machine. So practical!

Towards the end of the night, our end of the table had this many skewers. (End count > 100 skewers between the four of us)

The other end of the table needs to seriously reconsider spending $26.80 each for a meat buffet if they can only manage that many skewers =P

But not only do they have meat skewers, and vege skewers, and FISH skewers, they had cold sides- preserved carrot and radish, marinaded seaweed, sweet tofu skin, and some other cold salads (the carrot/radish one is my fave by far- really easy to make, will try these hols!), and desserts- red bean "soup", snow fungus sweet "soup", and ofc good ol' vanilla ice cream!

Rex is jealous. I can see it in his eyes.  Of my Winnie the Pooh spoon. (And yes, I realise I look immensely constipated in this photo)

Man, this post was such a joy to write.  It is almost 3am. I cannot fall asleep because I'm so incredibly full. My annual leave is almost up.  I hope my remaining holidays are just as good as today.

Eastwood Garden Peking

A little while ago, B, Q and I visited Eastwood Garden Peking for their 下午茶餐 menu.  From memory it's $6.80 for an item on the set menu and you get your "main" and a drink.

I always walked past this restaurant without really looking at the menus they had stuck on the window, so I never realised they  had this afternoon set menu special.  So we tried it, and we ordered:

• Sour & Spicy Soup + noodle
• Pork strips & preserved vegetables + noodle
• Dragon Dumplings (6)



We asked for three small bowls (for ease of sharing), and I guess we weren't specific enough.

We should have asked for washed bowls, because what we got were filthy ones with last night's dinner slime all over it. You can't tell from the blurred picture because I was shaking with immense rage when I took this. :@ :@ :@ So gross. I'm so not going back.

Things I didn't like about Eastwood Garden Peking Restaurant:

• They had slimy bowls and plates
• They gave me a lemon green tea when I ordered a lemon coke
• They forgot about B's order and we waited 25-30 mins for it...

There's more, but I ceebs getting angry over it now. It's too late.
