friending people who are not your friends on facebook

OK. So not everyone on my facebook friends list is exactly a good pal.  There are people you 'friend' under varied circumstances.  This is basically what I think prior to accepting/sending friend requests.

1. Your friends.
Der, regardless of their gender, appearance, branch of humour and hygiene, if you are friends IRL, you are friends on facebook. Simple.  People who are not your friends but are 'friends' on facebook will be divided into the following category:

2.  People from school
Your own grade: It's understood that you friend everyone in your cohort. No thinking required.
Grades above: People in the grades above are automatically awarded bonus points in my books. Why? It's very practical.  I feel like they experience life a bit before us, and going through their photos will be a very enlightening process. ***MORE ON THIS  BELOW***
Grades below: Veeeerry sceptical about people I add in the grades below.  Usually only if they're cool... or if I work with his/her siblings. (if we're friends, you're cool in my books).
Potential for future networking, and also, birds from the same nest have got to stick together. Will friend on facebook.

3. People from work
This is rare. I rarely add my colleagues as friends if we aren't pals at work. The only exception would be because the friend is relocating offices and working in some exotic European country with picture-worthy views.  Potential to live vicariously through them during their travels.  Will friend on facebook.

4. Mutual friends
This person's name will keep popping up on your feed because you have a tumultuous number of mutual friends. You keep bumping into them at your friend's gatherings. Eventually this 'friend' could become a real friend. Has potential. Will friend on facebook.

5. People you've met once or twice on travels
You don't know this person too well, but the time you spent together (although short) was definitely memorable. Potential good friend if there is another catch up. Will friend on facebook. Also need to grab photos off them *bonus points*

6. People you've met once or twice, going out at night
This almost rarely happens. When you're on a night out and meet people, you virtually know NOTHING about them. By clicking accept on facebook, you are pretty much serving a myriad of personal information on a silver platter to a stranger. Probs won't friend on facebook.

Actually, number 6 never happens. I'm much too cautious.

7. Family members.
Ah yes. MDK are friends.  My cousins are also friends. As D puts it, why isn't it ok to friend someone you've known for your whole life, especially since it's ok to friend someone you've just met. So true.

8. People you know but don't like...
...mainly because they travel and you are jealous. Potential for aesthetic pics. Will friend on facebook.

I was going to say more on this topic, but got distracted by shoes. I'm trying to figure out how long it will take for me to get to the point where buying a pair of louboutins will seem 'immaterial'.  I saw my senior manager sporting a pair on Friday. So maybe in .. 10 years?  Ugh so materialistic.. but so
beautiful :')

***People from older grades - an observation
My sister was telling me that it's a cool thing at school for a girl to date someone in grades above. I sort of see her point, and I do see the logic in it. It's a popularity thing. For the girl, even if the older guy is a complete schmuck, she will look 'cooler' in front of her peers. For the guy... I guess younger girls are more naive and easy prey. Ahaha. Tell me what you think, I'm not an expert in this field!

FB seems to be in large part about photos for ye.

In many respects you're criteria are fairly broad.

I'd disagree with respect to 2 and 8. 8 = 100,000 bounty on head (figuratively speaking). Enemies for life!

(1) Does that mean I'm cool?! Woooo! :p

(2) Totally agree with your categorisations.. I don't think people really think accepting friend requests through - your fb has SO much personal information on it that you're like what, going to just give to a stranger who could be some psycho.. I remember reading a new article about a woman who had friended some guy who went to her high school (she didn't know him very well). Somehow, he knew where she lived, so when she posted a status update along the lines of "Night out with the girls!!" he broke into her house.. :|

(3) Louboutins! ♥

(4) As for the dating in older grades thing - I remember at NSG, there was a girl in your year who dated a Year 12 NSB when she was in Year 7? She didn't get any street cred - just developed a reputation as the school slut. :p

Freaky coincidence, I just deleted someone from category 6 off my fb just before I read this post. I usually feel too rude saying 'no, I don't really want to add you on fb' so I hit 'accept' and put them on a super restricted list... then delete a month later.

And haha the whole 'easy prey' thing means I stay the hell away from older guys. I clearly have trust issues.

A++++++++ WOULD FRIEND AGAIN

I pretty much agree with you on everything, except I've done 6. a few times in the past. (no so much these days) There was one guy I randomly met at a Muse concert on the train. We still randomly talk about music when the topic comes up.

You can always put your "friends" on different lists on Facebook, then edit your privacy settings for these lists...

Creating a "restricted" list is also useful if you want want to block people from viewing your information, but keep them as "Friends"

@Tim: yeah. If it weren't for events and photos, I might not even be on fb. You gotta keep an eye on your enemies!!

@Jess: (1) yes :P (2) ... what?! holy crap that is freaky (3)loubies HOORAY, but not really because i'm not gonna be able to afford them for another 10 years, (4) ok - that was a rather extreme case ahaha. I knew a few girls who went out with guys in the grade above but they didn't get sluzza street cred :P

@diti: two words: YOU COUGAR.
jokes :P (nobutreally)

@Jos: that's cool. I've never warmed up to anyone at a concert or anything. But then again, I haven't been to that many.

@Shaun: ceebs making that list. I think one or two people on my list have very restricted access, but eh... it's easier to just delete them a day later.

I have a similar system too. When we were still in school, I found it weird when people in the grades below added me, even though I've never met them/talked to them IRL. Still, I usually clicked accepted for the 'networking and birds' reasons you posted and promptly chucked them into my 'acquaintance' or custom-made restricted groups.

Noooo the blogger/google tricked me into opening a 'blogger' account because when I was commenting, the 'choose an identity' automatically selected google account :(
