I'm a bit behind on food posts- catching up now, before class! I need to jot down my thoughts before they all escape my mind.
I went to another Korean restaurant last week called Drunken Rice. I had no idea what that was to begin with, but we soon realised it was their pseudo-signature item- makkoli, a kind of fermented rice wine.
We ordered a pork belly dish and a beef stew (I just realised that I always get beef stew- it's such a safe option). The pork was really full of flavour- and just a very good/ satisfying dish, and the stew was really sweet and ... clean? I find is a good thing because I'm not very good at eating anything spicy.
The makkoli tasted really, really good compared to the soju. As A would put it, Soju "tastes like ass". Makkoli is a bit like yakult, as weird as that sounds. It's definitely a lot sweeter and doesn't burn every tube leading to your stomach. I guess it's Chinese equivalent is "jiu niang" the fermented glutinous rice stuff. Jiu niang is a tonne sweeter but I feel like its more... potent. (At home my dad makes a soupy dessert with jiu niang. I am not really a fan.) ANYWAY, the best part about makkoli is that it's served in kettles, and poured into little (foot basin like) vessels to be drunk out of. I'm a sucker for gimmicky things, and the novelty of this definitely paid off (though this is leaning more towards cultural tradition than gimmicky).
In true unco-belle style, I kept nudging the service button on the table with my elbow (never sitting on that side of the table again!) accidentally calling the waiters and waitresses over :(
Getting there is easy. It's located in an alleyway - where the metro is. I'm 90% sure this used to be a Japanese restaurant (went there last year to celebrate C's birthday). The interior design of the place is pretty mad.
I'd defos go there again - it's pretty affordable! I think mains start at $15. :) Dinner was $30 incl food, soju and rice wine. Very economical!
